Temperatures in most parts of India likely to go up in next few days: IMD forecast

High heat is likely to send power demand soaring in the country as more and more people turn on air conditioners and other cooling devices, the weather agency said.

Temperatures are all set to rise across India in the next two days as rain recedes, the India Meteorological Department said on Friday.

The IMD issued forecasts of likely heat waves in some areas for the next few days and beyond.

Odisha is likely to see hot and uncomfortable weather over the next five days, driven by humidity and soaring temperatures, it said. Similar patterns were forecast for Kerala and Tamil Nadu for May 13-14.

High heat is likely to send power demand soaring in the country as more and more people turn on air conditioners and other cooling devices, the weather agency said.

As per IMD's forecast, except some zones, most parts of India are likely to remain dry over the next five days. Areas that might get rain include West Bengal, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and northeastern states.

In the week ended May 10, rainfall was above normal across most of the country, the agency said.

Heat wave conditions were forecast for some parts of Northeast Bihar. "Heatwave conditions will prevail in some districts of Northeast Bihar. Due to the arrival of easterly winds in the state, there is a possibility of a decrease in temperature by one-two degrees. Relief from the heatwave is expected in the state for 3 to 4 days from tomorrow onwards," Ashish Kumar, Scientist and Head, Meteorological Centre Patna, said.

As per IMD's classification, a heat wave, qualitatively, is a condition of air temperature which becomes fatal to human body when exposed. Quantitatively, it is defined based on the temperature thresholds over a region in terms of actual temperature or its departure from normal.

In some countries, it is defined in terms of the heat index based on temperature and humidity or based on the extreme percentile of the temperatures.
