Telangana imposed a 10-day lockdown from Wednesday amid a surge in Covid-19 cases, after having resisted the recommendations of health experts and advice of the high court arguing that the number of cases did not come down in the states which had imposed such restrictions.

The lockdown will remain in force from 10 am till 6 am the next day and the public will be allowed relaxation of four hours a day from 6 am to 10 am. The government exempted from lockdown essential sectors such as agriculture, allied services, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, hospitals, medical shops, cold storages and warehousing, and essential services such as power and waterworks, and print and electronic media. E-commerce and online delivery services are also exempted from the lockdown, industries minister KT Rama Rao told ET.

The cabinet decided to meet again on May 20 to take stock of the situation.
