Tehran hosts maiden India, Iran, Uzbekistan trilateral

New Delhi: The first India-Iran-Uzbekistan trilateral meeting at the foreign ministries' level has decided to put in place a mechanism to enhance cooperation in combating extremism and terrorism besides giving a push to adequate use of the Chabahar Port by Uzbekistan to trade with India.

The meeting, held in Tehran on September 9, laid stress on expanding and deepening cooperation, especially in areas related to connectivity, utilising the strategic position of ports besides the International North-South Transit Corridor (INSTC), an official said.

They reviewed the progress made on the decisions adopted at the third meeting of the Chabahar Working Group held in November 2024 in Mumbai. The three countries also examined and emphasised measures to develop trade relations and other subjects of mutual interest, according to the official.


Ahead of this trilateral, India-Iran-Armenia also held its trilateral with focus on INSTC and use of Chabahar Port by Armenia.

Besides Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are also keen on using the Chabahar port for increasing trade with India and access to the Indian Ocean Region. India is seeking to put in place an early harvest FTA with Eurasian Economic Union to access markets of Eurasia and source goods from Eurasia including rare earth minerals.
