The income tax department in New Delhi has instructed officers to concentrate on the top 5,000 cases, which involve a staggering Rs 43 lakh crore of tax demand, ToI reported on August 21. This initiative is aimed at bolstering recovery and cutting down on funds locked in litigation, the report said.

High-ranking officers are required to establish special teams to scrutinize these cases and submit the list to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) by the end of September. The approach not only focuses on expediting high-value cases under litigation but also includes other strategies.

A directive for reviewing cases dating back 10 years has been issued to determine whether they should be written off or pursued with more vigor. In instances where the assessee is untraceable, tailored strategies are to be developed. The focus on tax demands is critical, highlighted in the central action plan shared with officers for the current fiscal year. The Indian government is keen to maximize revenue to meet its substantial expenditure requirements.

The tax department has projected a net collectible demand of Rs 16.7 lakh crore and has set a target to recover nearly Rs 8 lakh crore from arrear management. Of this, around 35%, or over Rs 2.8 lakh crore, is expected from Mumbai, followed by Rs 86,692 crore from Delhi, and further amounts from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The department's plan also emphasizes tracking high-value cash transactions occurring in hotels and hospitals. Additionally, the authorities will pursue individuals with large transactions that do not align with the income disclosed in their tax returns.
