Hotel near Tarapith temple faces fire incident, killing several people in West Bengal (Representative image)

A blaze erupted at a hotel near Tarapith temple in West Bengal's Birbhum district, killing at least seven pilgrims and leaving several others criticall injured, officials told PTI on Monday.

The fire erupted around 5 am on the ground floor of the four-storey hotel in the temple town of Tarapith, when most of the devotees were asleep.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and thee blaze was brought under control. The injured were taken to the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital.

Sources in the hospital initially reported the death toll from the West Bengal fire incident as five. However, police later revised the toll to seven.

Hotel staff claimed the fire was caused by a short circuit.
