Consumers in Tamil Nadu have to shell out more for their preferred alcoholic beverages starting from Sunday, as the state-run TASMAC implements a new environmental cess of Rs 10.

Consumers in Tamil Nadu will face higher prices for their preferred alcoholic beverages starting Sunday, following the state-run TASMAC's implementation of a new Rs 10 environmental cess.

Under the revised structure, every retail purchase of IMFL, beer, or wine will instantly include this additional Rs 10 environmental and social welfare levy.

Citing a Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) circular, a senior official confirmed on Saturday that stakeholders throughout the supply chain, including suppliers and local producers, have been instructed to revise their pricing frameworks to meet the enforced deadline.

Highlighting that the initiative aims to fund state-administered social welfare and environmental projects, the official said "as the implementation date arrives tomorrow, retail shops and licensed establishments are preparing for the updated pricing rollout across all districts in Tamil Nadu".

To ensure a seamless transition, TASMAC instructed suppliers and wholesale depots to apply precise QR-code price labeling, cautioned employees against taking unauthorized surcharges, and established dedicated bank accounts in five regional zones to ensure financial transparency.

The TASMAC representative added that under the revised system, buyers can redeem their Rs 10 refund by returning eligible empty bottles to designated outlets.
