“The scoreboard is not merely a ranking exercise but a platform to help states understand their strengths and gaps and align their developmental priorities with science, technology and innovation,” Ashok Kumar Lahiri, vice chairman, NITI Aayog said.

Emphasising on the importance of translational research, Lahiri said the fundamental research must translate into innovation and reach the factory floor and called for providing financial incentives to universities or institutes that produce significant innovations.

He called upon states to take ownership of scientific and technological development and strengthen their innovation ecosystems, saying India needs to leapfrog and ensure we do not miss the next industrial revolution.

The scoreboard aims to provide a comprehensive picture of India’s science and technology ecosystem through key indicators, including research and development expenditure, scientific publications, citations, patent applications and technological innovation.

The initiative is expected to promote collaboration between state universities and centrally funded research institutions, encourage healthy competition and strengthen India’s research and innovation ecosystem in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
