Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution to freeze Lok Sabha seats at 543; backs 33% women’s quota
The Tamil Nadu Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Centre to permanently retain the Lok Sabha’s strength at 543 seats and implement 33% reservation for women from the 2029 elections without linking it to future delimitation. The resolution has triggered a political debate, with DMK, BJP, PMK and Congress leaders weighing in on the delimitation issue, representation of southern states and women’s reservation. Tamil Nadu has argued that states that successfully controlled population growth should not lose parliamentary representation because of delimitation based on a post-1971 Census.
