Tamil Nadu Weather: IMD issues rain alert for Chennai, heavy rain warning for 12 districts

Several districts of Tamil Nadu have been issued orange and yellow alerts by IMD for heavy rain in the next four days. The change in weather is attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the sea. The Weather department has also issued light to moderate rain in Chennai.

The affected districts include Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, and Ramanathapuram.

Further, a thunderstorm warning has been issued for isolated places across the state for the next three days. Authorities have urged citizens to take necessary precautions and remain indoors during the heavy rain. Holidays for schools and colleges is also being contemplated.

Chennai Weather:

The weather agency said that there will be fog and mist in Chennai and its suburbs during the early hours of Tuesday, March 11. Additionally, light to moderate rain, along with thunderstorm activity, is expected in some areas on Today.

Meanwhile, dry weather is expected in the state from Thursday, March 13, with no significant change in the maximum temperature over the next three days. The mercury level is likely to rise by two to three degrees Celsius above normal.

During the northeast monsoon season, Tamil Nadu received 14 per cent more rainfall. The state recorded 447 mm against the average of 393 mm, with Chennai witnessing 845 mm of rainfall, which is 16 per cent above average.

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry were severely affected by Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall between November 29 and December 1 last year.
