The Union home ministry has approved the setting up of a National Centre of Tactics (NCT), in Ibrahimpatnam near Hyderabad, to check the high rate of casualty among police personnel during counterterrorism and counter-insurgency operations in Kashmir and the Northeast, and against left-wing extremism (LWE) in several other parts of the country.

The institute will come up on a 400-acre plot adjacent to the National Security Guard hub, with a budget of ₹100 crore. It will be made operational by 2023-24, said officials.

More than 35,000 cops lost their lives between 1947 and 2019 due to terrorism, counter-insurgency operations and in law and order duties. The high casualty rate among police personnel prompted the government to commission a study and impart warfare training at the state level.

"NCT is envisaged to impart the latest cutting edge training in tactics for all police forces and CAPFs (central armed police forces) in the country," Atul Karwal, director of National Police Academy, told ET.
