India, seeking to expand its engagement with West Asia, is planning to host an Arab foreign ministerial meeting here in January.

Interestingly, Syria's foreign minister Asaad al-Shaibani could attend the meet as India continues to engage with the post-Assad regime. Earlier this year, a senior MEA official met the minister in Damascus and India also sent a consignment of humanitarian assistance to Syria.

Prior to the January meeting, high-level visits from India to the Arab world are in the pipeline. PM Narendra Modi could visit Oman and Jordan this month, sources said.

The meeting in January is being hosted under India-Arab League cooperation and work is underway to invite all Arab nations, ET has learnt.
