West Bengal to include contributions of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee in school and university curricula starting 2027 academic session
The decision was announced by the chief minister after the first meeting of a special committee constituted to plan and implement programmes marking Mookerjee's 125th birth anniversary.
"The school education department will include dedicated chapters on Mookerjee in the curriculum from the next academic session. His contributions as a freedom fighter and his constructive work for the state and the country, as well as his role as the country's industry minister, will be taught from the school to university level," Adhikari said. He said a year-long programme has already been launched through a joint initiative of the state government and the Union Ministry of Culture to mark Mookerjee's 125th birth anniversary. A special high-level committee, chaired by the chief minister, has been formed for this purpose.
A 125-foot statue of Mookerjee will be built at Eco Park in New Town. Adhikari said HIDCO had presented the full design and plan to the committee at Thursday's meeting. A state-of-the-art museum will also be established nearby. The inauguration of the statue is expected by July 6 next year. The CM said the Department of Information and Cultural Affairs would launch a portal where individuals and organisations could submit their views and proposals within a specified timeframe. The state government has also undertaken the renovation of Mookerjee's ancestral home in Hooghly's Jirat, for which 300 decimals of land have already been acquired.
