Surprising unity or witty banter? BJP and Congress exchange messages on social media during World Cup final

The BJP and Congress engaged in witty exchange on social media during India vs Australia World Cup ODI final in Ahmedabad. As India and Australia battled it out in the World Cup ODI final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, an unexpected exchange took place on social media between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The official handle of the BJP posted, "Come on Team India! We believe in you!" on X. In response, the Congress wrote, "TRUE THAT! JEETEGA INDIA." This exchange caught the attention of many, who saw it as a surprising display of unity between the two major political parties.

However, it soon became clear that this exchange was more about wit and banter than actual unity. The use of capital letters in the Congress' response was a dead giveaway, pointed out some netizens. It was a clever play on words, considering that the coalition of opposition parties, which includes the Congress, is called INDIA. This acronym stands for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance.


The announcement of the name INDIA for the grouping earlier in the year had sparked a war of words between the BJP and the opposition parties. The BJP responded that the renaming of the opposition grouping from the earlier Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) to INDIA by saying that the character of the bloc will not change with the change of name.



Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, replaced ‘India’ from his Twitter bio. His new bio now reads ‘Chief Minister of Assam, BHARAT’. Sarma also said in a tweet, “Our civilisational conflict is pivoted around India and Bharat. The British named our country India. We must rive to free ourselves from colonial legacies. Our forefathers fought for Bharat, and we will continue to work for Bharat. BJP for BHARAT.”
