New Delhi [India]: The Special Lok Adalat at the Supreme Court of India settled more than 400 cases on its first day, on August 21, as part of Samadhan Samaroh 2026 - Supreme Court Action for Mediated Adjudication and Disputes Harmonisation Across the Nation.

Held under the guidance of the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, the Special Lok Adalat commenced on Friday and will continue for two days, culminating on August 23.

The initiative aims to facilitate amicable settlement of pending disputes and provide litigants an opportunity to resolve their cases through dialogue and consent, stated a press release issued by the Supreme Court.

"More than 600 cases were listed for settlement before 16 Special Lok Adalat Benches, each comprising two sitting Judges of the Supreme Court of India, along with senior advocates, Advocates-on-Record (AORs) and other advocates, with more than 400 cases being amicably settled. The benches facilitated dialogue between the parties and assisted them in exploring the possibility of an amicable settlement," it added.

The matters taken up included matrimonial and property disputes, motor accident claims, land acquisition and compensation cases, tax matters, and service and labour disputes.

The cases had undergone a pre-settlement process since the launch of the Samadhan Samaroh initiative on April 21, with litigants and their counsel being engaged to assess the possibility of an amicable resolution.

The Special Lok Adalat is aimed at strengthening consensual dispute resolution mechanisms and reducing the burden of prolonged litigation.

The Supreme Court has said the initiative reflects its continued efforts to promote mediation and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms as an integral part of the justice delivery system.

The Samadhan Samaroh 2026 will conclude on August 23 following the completion of the Special Lok Adalat proceedings.
