The state government said that the ashram spread over 5 acres would not be touched, but the rest of the waterfront would be developed into an 'attractive tourist destination'. Gandhi's grandson said it went contrary to the spirit of the ashram and ideals it stood for.
Gandhi led a very simple life in the ashram and simplicity was its essence. The state government's plans would commercialise the place. Although it may lead to more footfalls, it could destroy the essence of the ashram, he contended.
Tushar Gandhi also contended that the redevelopment plan went against Gandhi's express wishes in writing regarding the ashram's future. Appearing for the state, solicitor general Tushar Mehta said most fears regarding the redevelopment plan were based on 'unfounded apprehensions.' The ashram was surrounded by a 300-acre plot. Only a few dilapidated buildings will be demolished.
