Chief Justice of India Surya Kant administered the oath of office to justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli and V Mohana. While the first four were serving as high court chief justices before their elevation to the top court, senior advocate Mohana was directly elevated from the bar to the bench.

With the elevation of senior advocate V Mohana to the Supreme Court, the top court has got a woman judge after a gap of more than five years. Until justice Mohana's appointment, justice BV Nagarathna was the only woman judge in the top court. Justice Mohana is also the second woman lawyer to be directly elevated from the bar to the apex court after former judge, justice Indu Malhotra.

The Supreme Court collegium headed by CJI Kant on May 27 recommended the elevation of the four high court chief justices and senior advocate Mohana to the top court. The central government cleared the recommendations on Monday.
