New Delhi: The Apna Dal (S), a BJP ally, has asked that the government support reserved category candidates in the teacher recruitment case in Uttar Pradesh.

The statement came after the Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Allahabad High Court order asking the Uttar Pradesh government to prepare a fresh selection list for the appointment of 69,000 assistant teachers in the state.

The top court also stayed the HC verdict setting aside the selection lists of assistant teachers issued by the state authorities in June 2020 and January 2022, which included 6,800 candidates.

The bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra also issued notices to the state government and others, including the secretary of the UP Basic Education Board, on a plea filed by Ravi Kumar Saxena and 51 others. The bench said it will fix the plea for hearing in the week commencing September 23.

In August, the division bench of the Allahabad HC had also revised the earlier order and said reserved category candidates who qualify for the general category merit list should be migrated to that category. The HC had upheld the single-judge's decision to cancel the January 5, 2022 selection list of 6,800 candidates belonging to the reserved category.

The issue of selecting 69,000 assistant teachers in the Uttar Pradesh government has divided the NDA parties. Anupriya Patel, the Apna Dal (S) leader and union minister od state, has accused the UP government of treating reserved category candidates unfairly in the examination.

Patel posted a statement on her social media pages on Monday, following the Supreme Court's order.

"Our party stands firmly with the reserved category candidates. From the beginning, our party said injustice has been done to the reserved category candidates in the case of 69,000 recruitment," Patel wrote on X. "Our party clearly believes that the Uttar Pradesh government should come forward to provide justice to the reserved category candidates who have become victims of injustice."
