Supreme Court stays conviction of Lakshadweep MP Mohd Faizal

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed an order of the Kerala High Court refusing to suspend the conviction of Lakshadweep MP and NCP leader PP Mohd Faizal in an attempt to murder case.

Staying the conviction would result in restoration of the Lok Sabha membership of Faizal who stood disqualified from Parliament after the high court order. The top court has sought response of the Lakshadweep administration and complainants in the case on the appeal filed by Faizal.

On January 11, a lower court had convicted four persons, including Faizal, for allegedly attempting to murder Padanath Salih, son-in-law ofCongress leader PM Sayeed. All the four accused were sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.


After this, Faizal was disqualified from holding the office of MP and a notification in this regard was also issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat. The Kerala HC on January 25 suspended the conviction and sentence, following which the Lakshadweep administration appealed before the SC.
