NEET-MDS 2024 exam date: Centre asked to decide within a week. What the Supreme Court said

The Supreme Court on Wednesday urged the Centre to promptly address the representation regarding the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test for Masters of Dental Surgery (NEET MDS) 2024, as it deliberated a petition seeking the postponement of the NEET-MDS 2024 examination. The Centre informed the court that it is currently reviewing the matter.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, suggested waiting for the government's decision, acknowledging its involvement in resolving the issue. The court emphasized the policy domain's jurisdiction, referring to the government's discretion. It directed the Centre to expedite its decision on the representation within a week. NEET-MDS 2024 examination is scheduled to be held on March 18, 2024. The petition also sought an adjustment of the eligibility cut-off by aligning it with internship completion dates. A group of candidates has petitioned for the postponement of the NEET MDS 2024 exam to July, aligning it with the NEET PG schedule to facilitate adequate preparation time.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) had set the internship cut-off date for NEET PG as August 15, while NEET MDS's deadline stands at March 31. The registration window for NEET MDS 2024 closed on February 19.


In 2023, the Telangana High Court dismissed a writ petition requesting the rescheduling of NEET MDS 2023, emphasizing the necessity of a uniform cut-off date for MBBS/BDS graduates nationwide to ensure adequate preparation time.

Several candidates have expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to postpone the NEET PG 2024 exam from March 3 to July 7, considering it discriminatory compared to the NEET MDS exam. Advocating for fairness, candidates argue that past NEET MDS exams have coincided with NEET PG, highlighting the need for synchronized schedules to allow for sufficient preparation time.

Key Dates for NEET MDS 2024

Registration for NEET MDS 2024, overseen by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), will end on February 19, 2024. The editing window spans from February 22 to February 25, 2024, with a final opportunity for edits available from March 5 to March 7, 2024. Admit cards will be released on March 13, and the exam is scheduled for March 18, 2024. Results are expected by April 18, 2024.
