NEET UG Result 2024: SC issues notice to NTA, says sanctity of exam has been affected

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the National Testing Agency, seeking a reply in the NEET-UG result irregularities case. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah hearing the case said, “The sanctity has been affected, so we need answers." The bench also said that the counselling would not be stopped and listed the case on July 8 along with a similar plea.

The plea filed against the National Testing Agency (NTA) said that the exam on May 5 was conducted amid malpractices, including multiple paper leaks.

The alleged paper leak was violative of Article 14 (right to equality) under the Constitution as it gave an undue advantage to some candidates over others who chose to attempt the examination in a fair manner, it said.



There are allegations of irregularities in the results announced on June 4 as well. A total of 67 candidates shared first rank including six from the same centre in Haryana. The allocation of grace marks to a few candidates has also been questioned.

The alleged irregularities have been flagged by several opposition parties including the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress. The AAP has demanded a Supreme-Court monitored SIT probe into the issue, while Congress leaders including Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and KC Venugopal alleged paper leak and corruption.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday said in a Tweet on X, "Lakhs of children prepare hard for exams like NEET and spend the most precious moments of their lives preparing for it. The whole family puts their faith and strength in this effort. But year after year, paper leaks and irregularities related to results have been reported in these exams."

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing affiliated to the RSS, on Saturday demanded a CBI inquiry into the allegations on the NEET-UG.


The NTA had set up a four-member committee to review the results of 1,563 candidates. These candidates are from Meghalaya, Bahadurgarh in Haryana, Dantewada and Balodh in Chhattisgarh, Surat in Gujarat and Chandigarh. There are allegations that candidates in these centres were awarded grace marks for ‘loss of time.’

“A high-powered committee has been set up to review the results of over 1,563 candidates. The four-member panel headed by a former UPSC chairman will submit its recommendations within a week and the results of these candidates might be revised,” said Subodh Kumar Singh, director general, NTA.

However, The NTA has denied the allegations and said that there were no irregularities, saying that changes in the NCERT text books and awarding grace marks was the reason for the high marks.

A total of 24 lakh candidates registered for the exam and 97% attempted it.

The NEET-UG exam is held for admissions for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH in government and private institutions of the country.
