New Delhi: Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned Enforcement Directorate for its actions pertaining to its money laundering probe into the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) case.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai verbally asked the ED counsel whether the agency was encroaching upon the rights of the state police in the case.

"What happens to the federal structure? Who controls law and order," CJI Gavai verbally asked.

"In the last six years, I have seen many cases of ED. But I do not want to say something, else it will again be reported (in the media)," the CJI remarked. The counsel for ED lamented that "anything in our favour is hardly reported and that is my grievance".

The bench extended its stay on further proceedings by ED, which is carrying out a money laundering probe into the purported ₹1,000 crore scam.
