Online Property Registration
The Central government is planning to introduce a new law that will allow people to register their properties online. This new bill will replace the Registration Act, which is 117 years old. The new law will make it mandatory to register documents like agreements to sell, power of attorney, sale certificates, and equitable mortgage arrangements, a TOI report stated.

The department of land resources, which is part of the rural development ministry, has released the draft of the bill for the public to review and comment on. This comes after several states decided to change the current law to allow for online registration. While the Registration Act is applicable throughout the country, states have the power to amend it after consulting with the central government.

The government also wants to allow for electronic registration certificates and keep records digitally. In addition to allowing documents to be submitted and accepted electronically for registration, the government has proposed using Aadhaar-based authentication with "informed consent." Other verification methods will be available for those who do not want to share their Aadhaar number, all as part of an effort to reduce fraud. The department also mentioned that the proposed law suggests integrating with other record-keeping agencies to improve the flow of information.

“In recent years, growing use of technologies, evolving socio-economic practices, and increasing reliance on registered documents have underscored need to create a forward-looking registration framework,” the land resources department said.
