Sonam Wangchuk discharged from hospital, says he will visit Rajghat before returning to Ladakh

Climate activist and scientist Sonam Wangchuk on Monday said he has been discharged from the hospital and will visit Rajghat in New Delhi to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi before returning to the mountains post Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests at Jantar Mantar.

In a post on X, Wangchuk wrote, "AND FINALLY.... I'm being discharged from the hospital. Will be going to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and then back to the mountains."

In a video posted on X, Wangchuk said he has gradually resumed eating and is regaining strength. Before returning to his home in Ladakh, he said he will visit Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Wangchuk recalled that before beginning his movement after returning from Switzerland, he had first paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat before proceeding to Jantar Mantar. "Today, we will do the same once again and then leave for Ladakh," he said.

He also thanked people across the country for supporting his campaign. "I want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. People from near and far, young and old, joined their voices with ours. Together, we carried forward a movement, and we succeeded. We will continue to do so," Wangchuk said.

He expressed gratitude to those who supported him during his hospital stay and thanked the medical team that treated him.

"Thank you all and BIG THANK YOU to the wonderful team of doctors and staff at Medanta Hospital Gurgaon," he said in the post.

Why was Wangchuk on hunger strike?

Wangchuk joined the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on June 28 and began an indefinite hunger strike in support of demands for accountability over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, reforms to the examination system, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. During his 26-day fast, he also raised issues concerning Ladakh while extending support to students protesting examination irregularities. Wangchuk ended his fast after the Centre assured that peaceful protesters would not face punitive action.

A 37-day-long agitation ended on Saturday with the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest, led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which began as a satirical social media account following Chief Justice of India Surya Kant's remarks, was withdrawn from Jantar Mantar after the government assured the protesters that their key demands would be addressed.
