Soldier injured in attacks by militants in Imphal East

A soldier was injured after militants launched gun and bomb attacks in Manipur's Imphal East district on Sunday, police officials said.

Security forces retaliated, resulting in a fierce exchange of fire, officials said. Additional forces have been rushed to prevent the situation from escalating further, the police officials said.



"Reports indicate that around 9:30 am, militants initiated their attack by firing towards farmers working in the paddy fields, followed by rounds of gunfire. The exchange continued until approximately 11 am when security forces and state forces intervened. (Militants launched) gunshots and bombs at Sabungkhok, Sanasabi and Yangangpokpi," the officials said.

Tension remained high in the surrounding villages as farmers were unable to tend to their paddy fields due to the firing from hilltop positions towards the low-lying fields, sources said.


Sources also said that there were reports of heavy firing in Jiribam's Mongbung Village. A 31-year-old woman was killed in an attack by unidentified persons on Zairon Hmar village in Jiribam district on Thursday night. Six houses were burnt in the incident. The woman's charred remains were found by villagers on Friday afternoon.
