The Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday said that social media is a potent weapon in the fifth generation warfare and some groups in J&K connected with the national and international networks attempt to disrupt peace in the region.

Sinha claimed that the police and other agencies are keeping a tab on such elements and the administration would ensure strict action against them. The J&K LG was speaking at a passing out parade of firemen in Udhampur district of Jammu.

“As part of fifth generation warfare, social media has become a potent weapon. Some groups here are connected not only at national but international level through (social media) and are attempting to disrupt peace in J&K,” said Sinha. He directed the police and other agencies to minutely monitor these activities. “I am sure that J&K police and other forces are aware and alert about this and working in this direction as well,” he said.

After August 5, 2019, when special status of the J&K was revoked and the state was downgraded into two union territories of J&K and Ladakh, the administration and police have amplified the monitoring of social media and has summoned, questioned several social media users from Kashmir and booked a few as well.

Sinha said that the police and other forces have sacrificed their lives and people have lost their loved ones in this region.

“This is the biggest crime against humanity and biggest human rights violation...we will fight it (militancy/violence) with commitment and full force and harsh action would be taken against those who help such activities,” Sinha warned. The LG urged police that that other than ‘ending terrorism’ they also have the big responsibility to gain trust of the people as well.
