Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will visit Canada and the United States soon. She will meet global investors and corporate executives to seek new investments.
The visit aims to strengthen bilateral economic partnerships with the two countries, expand investment linkages and advance cooperation on shared global priorities, the finance ministry said on Monday. Sitharaman's US visit will begin on August 28 and cover Chicago, Asheville in North Carolina and New York, following her Canada trip, the ministry said.

In Asheville, Sitharaman will lead the Indian delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting under the US presidency of the G20. The meeting, scheduled for August 31 to September 1, will bring together finance ministers, central bank governors and senior economic officials from G20 nations to discuss key global economic and financial issues amid continuing geopolitical conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine.
"The engagement will also provide an opportunity for India to advance its perspectives on contemporary global economic challenges and strengthen cooperation with G20 partners," the ministry said. Before that, Sitharaman will attend an investor roundtable in Chicago and meet senior private-sector executives. She will urge them to take advantage of the investment opportunities India offers amid its strong economic growth outlook. She will also visit the University of Chicago, where she will exchange views on entrepreneurship, innovation, technology commercialisation and strengthening links with India's rapidly expanding startup and innovation ecosystem. Sitharaman will subsequently participate in another investor roundtable in New York with senior representatives of major companies. During the New York visit, Nasdaq will host her for a bell-ringing ceremony. The US is India's largest goods trade partner after China and its third-largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI). Bilateral trade surpassed $140 billion in the last fiscal year. The US accounted for 10.4%, or $81.8 billion, of India's cumulative FDI inflows between January 2000 and March 2026.

Canada visit
Sitharaman will begin her two-nation tour with a visit to Canada. In Toronto, she will participate in the inaugural Economic and Financial Dialogue with Francois-Philippe Champagne, Canada's minister of finance and national revenue. The dialogue will provide a platform for both sides to "exchange views on macroeconomic developments, financial sector cooperation, bilateral investment opportunities and shared international priorities", the finance ministry said. Sitharaman will also hold meetings with leading Canadian investors and industrialists, including those from the energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals sectors. The Economic Times Business News App for the Latest News in Business, Sensex, Stock Market Updates & More.
