Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday sought the response of the state government, the Election Commission of India (ECI), and the State Election Commission (SEC) on a petition questioning the SEC’s decision to hold a parallel special intensive revision (SIR) for Bengaluru’s select civic wards.

The government must hold elections for the five city corporations of Bengaluru by the end of August.

The petition questioned the logic behind the SEC’s decision to hold another round of SIR when the ECI was already conducting a door-to-door enumeration of voters.

Justice Suraj Govindaraj ordered notice to the respondents and granted them a week's time to file their respective responses. The court posted the case for further hearing to July 15.

A group of citizens of Bengaluru filed the writ petition, challenging the SEC’s directions to the government to get a separate SIR of electoral rolls for specific municipal wards of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA).

The ECI already launched a nationwide SIR of electoral rolls and as per the ECI's schedule, assembly electoral rolls were frozen as of June 16, 2026. The SIR revision would end with the publication of final rolls on October 7, 2026, the petition said, arguing that the SEC’s decision has resulted in two simultaneous revision exercises for the same electorate.
