Russian Ambassador to India Nikolay Kudashev said on Sunday that there are plans to introduce the single-shot vaccine ‘Sputnik Light’ in India soon in what would increase the volume of vaccines available in the country. Kudashev made the remarks with the second batch of Sputnik V vaccines landing in Hyderabad on Sunday.

“Production of Sputnik V in India is expected to be gradually ramped up to 850 million doses per year,” Kudashev said, and emphasised that its efficacy is “well-known in the world”.

“In Russia, it’s being successfully used to vaccinate citizens starting since second half of 2020. Russian specialists declared it’s also effective against new Covid-19 strains,” he stated.

It has been learnt that talks to get immediate approval for Sputnik Light might take place in June. Sputnik Light has already been approved in Russia and it has demonstrated an efficacy of 79.4%. The first consignment of Sputnik V vaccines landed in India on May 1. The vaccine is likely to be available in the market from this week, the Centre said last Thursday.
