The Shri Kashi Vidwat Parishad (SKVP), a prominent body of scholars in Varanasi, has confirmed that the abandoned temple found in the Devnathpura locality of Madanpura is indeed dedicated to Siddheshwar Mahadev.

The initial findings from their ongoing research have pointed to this conclusion, though further investigations are required to fully understand the site’s historical significance.

The SKVP, which initiated a detailed study of the temple, has decided to conduct an extensive physical survey, which will include examining ancient scriptures and maps, along with the nearby water body, Siddhkali, that is mentioned in Hindu texts.

Despite the discovery of the Siddheshwar Mahadev temple, the water body referenced in the scriptures remains unaccounted for at the site.

Ram Narain Dwivedi, the general secretary of SKVP, remarked, "It is possible that the water body is now hidden beneath a platform, and that the temples in the area were subsumed under the houses built in recent decades." The team is currently reviewing the oldest available maps to track the original locations of the water body and other temples in the vicinity.

"We are gathering all possible evidence, as we may need to present it in court if the matter becomes a subject of litigation," Dwivedi added. He emphasized that the research and subsequent actions will proceed carefully, ensuring that everything aligns with the scriptures and historical documentation.

The SKVP also plans to involve the local administration to aid in gathering necessary information for their survey. "We are stepping forward cautiously, making sure that every step we take is in accordance with the historical texts," Dwivedi noted.

As the investigation progresses, the SKVP has expressed its intent to restore and renovate any additional Shiva temples identified in the region. If it is found that some temples are currently located within private buildings, the SKVP intends to explore options to acquire those properties to facilitate restoration efforts.

Dwivedi further shared that they have received support from local religious leaders, including the Akhara Parishad, Mahamandaleshwars, and other seers, who have expressed interest in adopting the Siddheshwar Mahadev temple and potentially other abandoned temples for regular worship. "These seers have reached out to us, wishing to ensure the proper upkeep and reverence of these historical sites," he said.

The ongoing research and restoration plans highlight the SKVP's commitment to preserving Varanasi's rich religious heritage while ensuring that any legal, social, or logistical hurdles are addressed with the utmost care and respect for tradition.
