According to Canadian media, a spokesperson for the B.C. Gurdwaras Council said the home belongs to Simranjeet Singh, who was a friend of slain pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
According to a CBC report, on thursday afternoon a car was found near the house that had been heavily damaged by gunfire, along with multiple bullet holes in the house itself.
The Surrey detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said “RCMP received a report of shots fired at a residence.”
Surrey RCMP in a statement said that on February 1, at approximately 1:21 am, it received a report of shots fired at a residence and frontline officers attended the scene and located evidence consistent with a shooting.
Canadian Police is still working to determine the motive of this incident.
No injuries were reported.
Moninder Singh, the spokesperson for the B.C. Gurdwaras Council, said community members believe homeowner Simranjeet Singh's connection with Hardeep Singh Nijjar might have played a part in the shooting, according to a Canadian media report.
"[Simranjeet] feels like this is the Indian state, or their actors, that are playing their part here to kind of scare them off from ... the activism work that he's doing," he said.
India, however, rejected the charges by Canada, deeming them as "absurd and motivated" and said the country has a strong commitment to the rule of law.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot dead at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in the Punjabi-dominated Surrey city of British Columbia province. He was the president of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in Surrey. Nijjar was associated with the separatist organisation, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which is banned in India. He had played a key role in organising the Khalistan referendum in Brampton city.
