Inside an Aligarh police station on Tuesday, a 25-year-old man drenched his 60-year-old mother in fuel before setting her ablaze in front of police officers.

After suffering over 70% burns, Hemlata Devi passed away in a hospital a few hours later.

The man, his mother, and uncle had been called to the police station in Khair for questioning.

SP (Dehat) Palash Bansal said, "The woman used to live with her two sons in their ancestral house at Darkan Nagariya village following the death of her husband. Her brother-in-law's family resides in one part of the house, and a dispute over the division of the property was going on. Both parties were called to the police station for an inquiry."

Gaurav Kumra set his mother on fire, according to police, in an attempt to put pressure on the officers and the uncle inside the police station. The woman had already suffered terrible burns over her entire body when the police arrived and managed to put out the fire. Soon after the incident SSP Sanjeev Suman and SP (rural) Palash Bansal were called at police station. The cops have detained Gaurav.
