Shivaprakash Murder Case: Police arrest BJP MLA BA Basavaraj after SC denies bail

Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Rural Police arrested BJP MLA BA Basavaraj on Thursday evening, hours after the Supreme Court refused to entertain an anticipatory bail plea filed by him in the case of rowdy-sheeter Shivaprakash alias Bikla Shiva's murder in Bengaluru in July last year.

The Devanahalli police team, led by assistant commissioner Sriharsha, took him into custody as soon as the former minister arrived at the international airport in Bengaluru from Ahmedabad. The BJP lawmaker was later handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is probing the murder case.

The police were waiting at the airport after a bench of chief justice Surya Kant and justice Joymalya Bagchi suggested that the lawmaker move a plea for regular bail instead of a request for anticipatory bail. The chief justice also said that the lawmaker must show the courage to face the trial since he was a people's representative.
