Veteran Malayalam actor Mammootty and former Jharkhand chief minister Shibu Soren, who was honoured posthumously, were among the prominent personalities conferred the Padma Bhushan by President Droupadi Murmu at the second Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.

Playback singer Alka Yagnik and tennis great Vijay Amritraj also received the country's third-highest civilian honour for their distinguished contributions to music and sports, respectively.

Mammootty, whose career spans more than four decades and over 400 films across Malayalam and other Indian languages, was recognised for his enduring contribution to Indian cinema. Soren, the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and a towering tribal leader who played a pivotal role in the movement for a separate Jharkhand state, was honoured posthumously for his contribution to public affairs.

His family received the award on his behalf. Alka Yagnik was recognised for a singing career spanning more than three decades, during which she became one of Hindi cinema's most celebrated playback voices, while former Davis Cup player Vijay Amritraj was honoured for his achievements in tennis and his contribution to promoting the sport globally.

The ceremony also saw President Murmu confer the Padma Vibhushan on eminent Malayalam journalist P. Narayanan for his contribution to literature and education, and former Supreme Court judge Justice (Retd. ) K.T. Thomas for his distinguished service in public affairs.

Aerospace scientist Dr. Shubha Venkatesha Iyengar, noted haematologist Dr. Suresh Hanagavadi and writer Ashok Kumar Haldar were among the recipients of the Padma Shri conferred by President Droupadi Murmu at the second Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.

Dr. Iyengar was honoured for her contribution to India's aerospace and space research, while Dr. Hanagavadi received the civilian award for his distinguished work in haematology and his long-standing efforts in the treatment and advocacy of haemophilia. Haldar was recognised for his contribution to literature through his body of work as a writer.

Among the Padma Shri awardees honoured were acclaimed Carnatic percussion maestro Thiruvaarur Bakthavathsalam, veteran Assamese sculptor and art director Nuruddin Ahmed, along with several distinguished personalities from the fields of arts, literature, sports and public service.
