Mumbai: Indian investigative agencies are examining information emerging from the UK following the arrest of prominent criminal lawyer Vijay Aggarwal, with the CBI and ED separately assessing whether any offence involving him can be made out, people familiar with the matter said.

Aggarwal was arrested in London on August 11 and charged with four counts of sexual assault. He appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 13 and was remanded in custody. His next hearing is scheduled on September 10.

Under PMLA, an ED money laundering investigation is linked to a scheduled offence, commonly referred to as the predicate offence. Depending on nature of the alleged offence, CBI could examine whether the material warrants registration of such a case. "Investigation by the UK police is at a preliminary stage. A request to share its findings will be made and, once the probe report is studied, course of action could be decided," a senior government source said.
