"In a swift and coordinated response, Lakhimpur Police have apprehended 7 individuals in connection with the recovery of 3 cattle skulls found approximately 30 meters from Siring Chuk Namghar, along the roadside'', the Chief Minister posted on 'X'.

The arrested persons are Monsur Ali, Md. Rejjak Ali, Saha Ali, Diluar Hussain, Dildar Hussain, Abu Kalam Ali and Jahidul Islam, he said.

The Assam government had issued shoot-at-sight orders in Dhubri district after a cow’s head was found in front of a Hanuman temple the day after Bakrid.

The following day, another cattle skull was discovered at the same spot, accompanied by incidents of stone pelting.

Police have so far arrested over 60 people, with over 50 in Dhubri alone, in connection with the illegal slaughter of cows to create communal disturbances in the state.

Sarma also announced private nursing homes in Assam will no longer be allowed to withhold bodies if families are unable to clear hospital dues,
Stating that it is illegal to detain the bodies he said, “After a person’s death, many private hospitals refuse to release the body unless all dues are paid. Some even keep patients hospitalised for days until bills are settled. This is unconstitutional.”

He added that a helpline will be launched families can contact in such situations. This will enable the police to intervene and ensure timely release of the body.”

The Chief Minister added that the matter would be taken up in the next state cabinet meeting, and a policy decision would be made on this. “We will soon come up with a concrete solution to prevent such inhumane practices.”
