During the meeting here, Gor conveyed US President Donald Trump’s special regards for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his own personal interest in building on convergences with India instead focusing on irritants in ties, ET has learnt. It is understood that Gor mentioned about Trump’s references to "his friend Modi" whenever India-US ties have been discussed. Further Gor recalled that when the US president gave him the option to choose any ambassadorial posting, he chose India and felt that he could contribute in taking the ties forward.
Shringla was the only non-official meeting that Gor held during his visit here as two know each other for the past half a decade. Gor was on a 4-day visit to India ahead of his ambassadorial posting.
Earlier on Saturday, Gor called on the PM and met the external affairs minister and the foreign secretary. “Glad to receive Mr Sergio Gor, Ambassador-designate of the US to India. I’m confident that his tenure will further strengthen the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership,” Modi wrote on X after meeting Gor.
Trump’s choice of his close political aide Gor as the next US ambassador to India could be a gamechanger amid the current challenges and turbulence that the relationship is facing. Gor is part of Trump’s inner circle and he could use his proximity to directly speak to Trump on India’s views on the current irritants in the partnership. Gor could turn out to be a bridge builder.
