Senior advocate R Venkataramani appointed as new Attorney General of India

Earlier this week senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi had turned down the central government's offer of a second term as Attorney General. Rohatgi was the Attorney General from June 2014 to June 2017.

Senior advocate R Venkataramani on Wednesday appointed as the new Attorney General of India for a period of three years, according to a notification. He will succeed KK Venugopal after the latter's term ends on September 30.

Earlier this week senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi had turned down the central government's offer of a second term as Attorney General. Rohatgi was the Attorney General from June 2014 to June 2017.

Venkataramani was succeeded by Venugopal, who was appointed to the post in July 2017. Venugopal was reappointed as the top law officer of the country for three months on June 29. He had been unwilling to continue in the post due to "personal reasons". However, he acceded to a request from the government for continuing till September 30.
