The UP Police booked SP MP from Sambhar, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, and two others under charges including sedition for alleged pro-Taliban statements.

The action came in the wake of an FIR filed on the basis of a complaint against Barq, Faizan Chaudhary and Mohammad Mukim late night in Sambhal by a private person, Rajesh Singhal, under sections 124 A (sedition), 153 A (promoting enmity on religious grounds) and 295 A (intention to outrage religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code.

After the complaint, he said: “My statement has been misinterpreted. I’m a citizen of India, not of Afghanistan. I have no business with what is happening there. I support my government’s policies.”
