Guwahati: There was scuffle between police and a group of people in Azara in the vicinity of Guwahati while eviction notices were served in the area.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that around 16 people were arrested in connection with the incident, and a permanent police picket is posted there. “We will strongly deal with the stranger people who are occupying land in the tribal land block.”

He said, “The place is in the chief minister’s constituency. In the tribal belt and block some people have occupied land. As per the law they are served notice and there is reasonable time for them to reply however when people from police and district administration went to serve notice, strangers attack the police and officials of district administration.”

He added, “Despite government recovering 1.5 lakh bighas of land from illegal occupants, such strangers are ready to fight. In our state if there is no BJP rule these people will not care for anything. I have directed to take strict action against them. Already 16 people have been arrested. These people are not indigenous people, and we will ensure that these people are evicted from the tribal land and block.”

Union Home minister Amit Shah on February 21 in Assam said that the Congress party committed sin. “BJP will relieve the state from the sins of Congress. Himanta said that the BJP government has freed 1.5 lakh bighas from illegal encroachment in the last five years and he also said that he will clear illegal encroachment from 5 lakh bighas. Knowing the way Himanta functions, I am sure he will make 5 lakh bighas of land encroachment free.”

He said, “Only clearing this land will not solve Assam’s problem, from here they will move to elsewhere in the country. I am seeking another five-year term, and I promise you each infiltrator will be expelled from Assam. If a large portion of the country area can be Naxalite free similarly Assam can be infiltrator free. For this you require grit, commitment and boldness and Prime minister Narendra Modi has it all.”
