Observing severe cold weather conditions in many parts of the country, authorities in the northern region have again declared the extension of school winter holidays.

Dense to very dense fog conditions are expected to persist for a few hours during the night and morning in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh until January 27 (Saturday), the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted.

States that have extended winter vacations:


Uttar Pradesh:

Looking at the extreme cold wave conditions and dense fog in the city, the Lucknow district magistrate has directed schools to extend the winter holidays for students up to Class 8 till January 27, 2024.

The directive issued by the Lucknow DM mandates the closure of all schools and conducting classes in the online mode.

Haryana:
The Directorate of School Education in an official notification has ordered schools to extend winter vacations till January 27.


"The Department has decided to close the schools for students of classes 1st to 5th till 27.01.2024 (Government, Private and Govt. recognized) due to ongoing intense cold wave. Although the teaching and non-teaching staff shall attend the school as usual," the official notification read.

Chandigarh:

After extending winter vacations till January 20, the Chandigarh administration on Monday extended school holidays for one more week for students up to Class 5 in all government, government-aided and recognised private schools. In its order, the administration has also recommended schools to conduct online classes for these students.

"For Classes VI and above, given the weather conditions and the prediction for the week starting 22nd January 2024, the Schools may, for dates 23rd, 24th and 25th January 2024, consider conducting online classes, as opposed to physical mode," the official order read.

The administration in its order has also asked schools who are opting for physical classes for classes VI and above to take appropriate precautions to ensure that no child should be exposed to cold weather in schools or during their commute to and from school.
