The Supreme Court is set to hear a crucial batch of petitions on Wednesday challenging the constitutional validity of the recent amendments to the Waqf Act. Among the petition is also that of AIMIM leaader Asaduddin Owaisi.

A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, along with Justice PV Sanjay Kumar and Justice KV Viswanathan, will take up the matter at 2 pm.

Meanwhile, a number of BJP-ruled states and the Uttarakhand Waqf Board have filed intervention applications in support of the amended legislation.

Six states—Haryana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Assam—have approached the apex court individually, highlighting legal, administrative, and social justifications for retaining the amended law.

In addition to the state governments, the Uttarakhand Waqf Board has also filed a separate application seeking to intervene in the writ petition filed by AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, who is challenging the validity of the amendment. The Board has expressed its support for the new provisions and requested to be heard during proceedings.

The petitions, filed by various individuals and organizations, question the legality and constitutional standing of the amendments made to the Waqf Act, which governs the administration of waqf properties—endowments made by Muslims for religious or charitable purposes.
