New Delhi: The Supreme Court Friday directed the University Grants Commission to collate and furnish data from all universities pertaining to setting up of Equal Opportunity Cells.

A bench headed by Justice Surya Kant also asked the UGC to furnish data pertaining to the total number of complaints received under the UGC (Promotion of Equity in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2012 along with action taken reports. The direction was passed on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the mothers of deceased Rohit Vemula and Payal Tadvi assailing caste discrimination in higher educational institutions (HEIs).

The Bench was urged by one of the counsels for petitioners to summon data on the number of suicides in HEIs (along with caste-wise breakup).
