The Supreme Court on Monday sought the response of Karnataka deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar on a plea filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, seeking to lift a stay on its investigation against Shivakumar in a corruption case.

A bench headed by justice Aniruddha Bose refused to lift the stay order passed by the Karnataka High Court without first hearing the respondents including Shivakumar. The agency had petitioned SC against an order of the Karnataka High Court, which in June ordered an interim stay on CBI's probe against Shivakumar in connection with a disproportionate assets case.

On April 20, 2023, a plea was filed by Shivakumar to quash the state home department's order in the case, which was dismissed by a single bench of the Karnataka High Court.

Shivakumar had then petitioned a division bench of the high court, which granted him interim relief by staying CBI probe until his challenge is decided by the court.

The interim stay granted by the Karnataka High Court in June on the CBI probe was challenged by the agency in the Supreme Court.
