The Supreme Court has recommended repatriation of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma back to his parent Allahabad High Court.

A statement issued by the top court on Monday said: "The Supreme Court collegium in its meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025 has recommended repatriation of Mr. justice Yashwant Varma, judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad."

In a related development, the Allahabad High Court Bar Association passed a resolution, seeking impeachment of justice Varma.

The association requested the CJI to immediately recommend to the government to initiate impeachment proceedings against justice Varma.

"Continuance of justice Yashwant Varma any further is dangerous for democracy as it erodes 'public faith' which is the only power available with the judicial system. If faith is gone, everything is gone and nation will collapse," the bar association has said in its resolution.

The resolution passed by the association also urged the CJI to immediately permit filing of an FIR and investigation by CBI, ED and other investigative agencies.

Earlier in the day, following the directions of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, Delhi High Court chief justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya withdrew judicial work from justice Varma.

Following an in-house inquiry report submitted by Upadhyaya recommending "deeper probe" into the alleged discovery of sizeable cash from the official residence of justice Varma, the CJI on March 22 had asked the chief justice not to assign any judicial work to justice Varma for the time being. A notice withdrawing judicial work was issued by the registrar of the high court on Monday.

"In view of the recent events, judicial work from Hon'ble Mr. justice Yashwant Varma is withdrawn with immediate effect till further orders," the high court notice said. The court master will assign new dates for cases listed before justice Varma.

On March 22, the CJI had constituted a three-member committee, consisting of Punjab & Haryana High Court chief justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh High Court chief justice GS Sandhawalia and Karnataka High Court judge Anu Sivaraman for "conducting an enquiry into the allegations" against justice Varma.
