Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, sent to 15-day imprisonment in a defamation case

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut was convicted on Thursday by the Metropolitan Magistrate’s 25th Court in Mazgaon in a defamation case filed by Dr. Medha Kirit Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut was convicted on Thursday by the Metropolitan Magistrate’s 25th Court in Mazgaon in a defamation case filed by Dr. Medha Kirit Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya.

The case was filed by Dr. Somaiya after Raut allegedly made defamatory remarks against her, accusing her and the BJP leader of involvement in a Rs 100 crore corruption case related to the construction of public toilets under Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction.

The court has further imposed a Rs 25000 fine from the accused as compensation.


Dr Somaiya, who filed the case in May 2022, had sought criminal defamation proceedings against Raut under Indian Penal Code section 499.
