Sandip Ghosh, ex-RG Kar College principal, now on ED's radar; raids underway at his residence

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday conducted multiple raids across Kolkata including at the Beliaghata residence of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, ANI reported citing sources. These searches are part of the ongoing investigation into financial irregularities, with ED having registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Ghosh is currently in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Apart from his residence, ED officials also searched two other locations in Howrah and Subhasgram.

What is the corruption case against Sandip Ghosh?

Ghosh is under investigation for alleged corruption and financial irregularities at a college and hospital, particularly in the procurement of materials for patient care. This probe follows a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into the matter.

Ghosh was arrested on Monday in connection with the corruption case. Alongside him, three other suspects – Afsar Ali Khan, Ghosh's security guard; Biplab Singha, the owner of Maa Tara Traders, a vendor for RG Kar; and Suman Hazra, a medical shop owner in Howrah accused of selling recycled medicines from the hospital – were also taken into custody. They were all remanded to CBI custody until September 10.

The corruption charges comes amid the raging case of a medico from the medical college being raped and murdered.

CBI probe challenged by Ghosh

Earlier this week, former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh moved Supreme Court of India against the decision of the Calcutta High Court which ordered CBI probe into an alleged graft case against him.

The matter is listed to be heard on Friday in front of a bench led by CJI Chandrachud.
