“We had concrete discussions on investments. He told me that he will perform the bhumipujan for his second unit in West Bengal. I have urged him to get involved in ITI skill training and work in close coordination with West Bengal government hospitals. He will also undertake the renovation of some temples,” the CM said on Wednesday.
JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal met West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at Nabanna, the state secretariat, on Wednesday in Kolkata. The two discussed investment opportunities in Bengal across power, power systems, ports, cement and steel, people in the know told ET. However, details about the investment are not known. This was Jindal’s first meeting with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari since he took office.
Sajjan Jindal’s JSW Group had signed a historic agreement during the Left Front regime in 2007 to set up a mega integrated steel, power and cement complex in Salboni, West Midnapore. The project was worth around Rs 35,000 crore and was the single largest private investment ever pledged to West Bengal at the time. However, the ambitious project, part of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s industrialisation drive, faced immediate and severe hurdles, turning into a decades-long industrial saga.
A landmine blast occurred on the Salboni-Medinipur road at Kalaichandi shortly after the convoys of former CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Union Steel Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and industrialist Sajjan Jindal passed through the area after the project was inaugurated in November 2008.
