Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday expressed his condolences over the stampede at a religious congregation in Uttar Pradesh that resulted in the deaths of 121 people.

"President of #Russia Vladimir Putin sent a condolence message to President of #India Droupadi Murmu & Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi over the tragic stampede in #UttarPradesh: Kindly accept the most sincere condolences over the tragic accident in Uttar Pradesh," the Russian Embassy in India posted on X.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in Hathras district, where thousands had gathered near Phulrai village in the Sikandrarau area for a 'satsang' led by a religious preacher.

In response, the Uttar Pradesh Police lodged an FIR against the event organizers, accusing them of concealing evidence and violating regulations by allowing 2.5 lakh attendees despite having permission for only 80,000.
