Russian chess legend Garry Kasparov Gary Kasparov replies to Rahul Gandhi's admiration with a 'joke'
Russian chess champion Garry Kasparov clarifies his recent social media post about Indian politician Rahul Gandhi's chess skills, stating it was meant as a joke and not as political commentary. Kasparov's post went viral after he commented on Gand...

Kasparov's post quickly gained traction after he commented on Gandhi's claim of being the best chess player among Indian politicians. Responding to a post by actor Ranvir Shorey, Kasparov expressed his hope that his comment would not be misconstrued, stating, "I very much hope my little joke does not pass for advocacy or expertise in Indian politics!"
The former world chess champion, who retired from professional chess in 2005, has been known for his sharp wit and outspoken views. His recent post was in response to a video shared by the Congress party, showing Rahul Gandhi playing chess on his mobile phone during the Lok Sabha election campaign. Gandhi had named Kasparov as his favorite chess player and drew parallels between the game and politics.
In his post, Kasparov also responded to a user's comment on his page, which humorously suggested relief that Kasparov and Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand retired early and did not have to face the "greatest chess genius of our times."
Rahul Gandhi, in the Congress video, described Kasparov as a "non-linear thinker," drawing parallels between chess and politics. Gandhi, who is contesting from Wayanad and Rae Bareli in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, filed his nomination from Rae Bareli on Friday.
