RG Kar rape-murder case: Kolkata court seeks fresh progress report from CBI
A special court in Kolkata has instructed the CBI to submit a progress report by February 24 regarding the investigation of a doctor's rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The CBI had filed a charge sheet and the accused, Sanjay...

CBI had taken charge of the investigation following a Calcutta High Court order. It had filed a charge sheet before the trial court on October 7 and the charge against civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was framed on November 4. The trial court on January 20 sentenced Roy to life imprisonment. The victim's parents have said that they do not want death penalty for Roy.
Meanwhile, Calcutta High Court chief justice TS Sivagnanam has recused himself from hearing a PIL against former Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal in the RG Kar case, citing personal grounds. The matter will now be referred to another division bench for hearing.
The PIL was filed before the division bench of the chief justice last November when the RG Kar-related movement by junior doctors was at its peak. A plea for an FIR to be registered against Goyal in the matter for allegedly revealing the identity of the victim while interacting with media persons was mentioned in the PIL. The division bench then directed the Union Department of Personnel and Training to be a party in the case since it is the cadre-control authority of all central service officers, including an IPS officer like Goyal.
